Daughter of a Tamil architect father and a Bengali doctor mother who met while working at a hospital in Nigeria.
Was given the name Mindy based on the TV show Mork & Mindy (1978-1982) because her parents wanted her to have an Americanized name.
Graduated from Dartmouth in 2001with a bachelor’s degree in playwriting.
Gained some recognition after co-writing the play Matt & Ben (2002).
Was hired as a writer-performer on The Office in 2004, and then developed her own show The Mindy Project in 2012 which was cancelled by Fox after three seasons but then picked up by Hulu.
Has written two memoirs, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) (2011) and Why Not Me? (2015).
Is close friends with The Office’s B.J. Novak, whom she has dated on and off. Is writing a book with him about their relationship.
