Instep rounds up this weekend’s hot and happening activities around the country.

CINE WATCH

The return of the improbable male models

This weekend Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson return with their beloved creation from 15 years ago through Zoolander 2. The sequel to the 2001 comedy follows the story of the ridiculously good looking model Derek Zoolander and his rival Hansel coming out of wilderness and making a comeback to New York’s catwalk in order to tackle a new sinister fashion-related plot from fashion’s criminal mind Mugatu (Will Ferrell). While critics’ reviews have been harsh to the extent of labeling the film as “crushingly unfunny”, you can still catch a show at your nearest cinema screen in Pakistan if you want to refresh your memory of the two absurd, improbably successful figures in NY’s fashion scene.

Bollywood doesn’t have much on offer this weekend either especially now that the Sonam Kapoor-starrer Neerja has not been imported in the country. The only film to make it to the screens is Love Shhuda that was caught on our radars for one of its romantic numbers sung by none other than Atif Aslam. The film stars newbies Girish Kumar and Navneet Kaur alongside Tisca Chopra of Taare Zameen Par fame.

If none of the above suits your palate and you haven’t hit the cinema in over a week, this maybe your best chance to watch Ryan Reynolds’ second coming as a superhero in Deadpool. The Marvel offering has been receiving rave reviews and has been dubbed as a “must-see comic book movie experience”. Of course, it

’s also done spectacular business at the global box office.

MUSIC

Live Jams and Performances

Taazi.com collaborates with Sattar Buksh Islamabad to host its first live, unplugged jamming session this Saturday at the café itself. The event is unique in the sense that it will offer up and coming female artists the platform to sing live – hence titled Girl Power. The entry is free and there is delicious food up for grabs to sit back and enjoy the live music session with. However, it’s a couples and family-only event so stags will have to check Sattar off the list from 7:00pm till 10:00pm.

Back in Karachi, Undercover and friends unite to give an All-Star Music Performance at the PACC tonight. This is their third performance in the recent past and will feature Gumby on drums, Omran Shafique on guitar, Anas Alam Khan on bass and Sheldon Emmaneul on the vocals. Also joining the band will be Norwegian jazz musician Bugge Wesseltoft as well as guest musicians Babar Shaikh,

Natasha Humera Ejaz, Faisal Gill, Almitra and Mishaal. The tickets for the event are priced at PKR 800 and are available at The MAD School. For more information on the event, check out their official Facebook page.

FASHION

Lawn season kicks off

The new wave of windy chills may still have you wrapped up in a cozy shawl but not lawn-makers. Spring has begun and so has the lawn mania. This weekend will see the first yards of colourful prints hit the market with Yahsir Waheed’s exhibition in Karachi, this Saturday. The man has been making lawn for over 18 years now and his range of intricate, delicate prints with minimal embroidery is evergreen. This year’s Amaltas collection is going to be no different in calming blues and refreshing olives. The lookbook is already up on the Facebook page so best to shortlist the ones you like beforehand instead of getting lost in prints galore on the day of the exhibition.

If you aren’t the one to follow the herd and give into the lawn craze, designer Sanam Chaudhri is hosting an open house of her SS’16 prêt and luxury prêt collection on Saturday at her home-based studio. Head out to get your hands on some breezy cottons with hints of the designer’s signature cutwork and embroidery as well as a handful of fluid silhouettes.

FESTIVAL CIRCUIT

It’s time for LLF

Litteratis can get over the KLF blues and head to Lahore as the city is all set to host its annual Literature Festival. While the event has been stuck in a rut over the past few days – failing to get the NOC from the government as a result of security issues – reports have confirmed that the event will still happen but has been reduced to span over two days instead of the usual three, and will now take place at the Avari Hotel in Lahore instead of Al Hamra Arts Council. The schedule will be revised but since Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore was already seen crossing the border into Pakistan, one is hoping that the key session of the Bollywood veteran in conversation with Hameed Haroon will still be a feature.

Karachiites, on the other hand, can revel in some delicious, fingerlickin’ food as the Grand Turkish Festival kicks off at Port Grand tonight. Turkish themed décor, the country’s sumptuous delicacies, exhibits and live performances, the three-day fest promises to be an interesting family event on the city’s social calendar. The event will also host a meet-and-greet session with the team that drove 12,500 kilometers to Turkey from Pakistan. The entry ticket is priced at PKR 500 per person.
