Let’s paint a picture. You’re hosting a fancy dinner at home and have pulled out all the stops to ensure that the evening leaves your guests enthralled. From the china, cutlery, ambiance to food, there’s been meticulous attention to detail and everything is good to go until you realize that the entire house smells of sautéed onions or a heady mixture of masala. Air fresheners are ephemeral; they don’t kill the odor and dissipate in the air.

Summer fresh and fragrant, this cucumber and melon combination goes to the top of our summer scents list

What do you do? Enter your new best friend; scented candles.

You’ve probably come across a selection at your local super market and overlooked them thinking that they’re an unnecessary extravagance but the truth is that a good candle can transform the ambiance of your room. If you’re already a scented candle advocate then chances are that you’ve had to lug super expensive and weighty jars from abroad to keep up with your addiction. Either way, whether you’re a newbie or already a believer, a Karachi based company is about to change how you approach scented candles forever.

The brain-child of Sana Sajun and Neha Mashooqullah, Karachi Candle Company combines everything we love. The candles are well priced (a full size jar starts at Rs. 1300); in fact they’re inexpensive when you compare them to the premium price tag the imported ones come with. They’re strongly scented and within minutes of burning the wick a gorgeous scent permeates the room, eliminating odors or simply refreshing the atmosphere. There’s a plethora of scents available, ranging from classics like vanilla with a hint of beachy coconut to deluxe fragrances like motia noir, white champa and lemongrass. The aroma is long-lasting, as are the candles themselves. The brand currently has a range of 10 scents but plans on expanding soon.

Mashooqullah reveals that her partner and she have been best friends since childhood and have always enjoyed creating things with their own hands, “nerding out with crafts,” as she puts it. Elaborating further, Mashooqullah states, “we started experimenting with the idea of making our own candles over two years ago (primarily because we couldn’t find any great candles locally), with the company launching officially in December 2015. We specialize in soy based scented candles, and our strength lies in mixing local and international scents to produce a range that is very much rooted in Karachi, but can compete with any candle from any other part of the world in terms of raw materials and design.”

The duo plans on expanding its business from its current bases in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad to other cities across the country and even internationally via collaborations, stockists and an online store. We’re certainly rooting for them. You will too once you’ve tried their products.
