Baaghi releases worldwide

Tiger Shroff has found new love in Pakistan. The actor recently spoke to fans in Lahore via video conferencing and assured that he will soon come and visit them. He also went on record to say that he would love to work in a Pakistani film and will even charge less for it. Now if his debut performance in Heropanti isn’t a good enough reason to watch his second outing, Baaghi, releasing this weekend, then this could be. Also starring Shraddha Kapoor, Baaghi is a high-octane action film with young love at the heart of its plot. The film will see Shroff show off some serious martial art skills with Shraddha busting a move or two as well. It’s the only Bollywood film releasing this weekend and in fact the only new movie to make it to cinemas for the next week and hence, is expected to have a big opening. There have even been comparisons with Indonesian blockbuster The Raid: Redemption and so it appears to be a perfect movie night treat for action lovers.

If, however, you don’t quite fancy Tiger Shroff’s biceps then SRK’s Fan is still running across cinemas and so is The Jungle Book. The former sees SRK reinvent himself and experiment with a non-glamorous, non-musical, psychotic thriller. While fans have had a hard time digesting the unconvential film since they are used to watching SRK in his quintessential chocolate hero avatar, the 50-year-old star has done a fab job playing an obsessive 20-year-old fan. The Jungle Book, on the other hand, has received rave reviews from critics all over and has clobbered all releases over the past week. If you still haven’t caught this beautifully-shot adventurous Disney classic, then you must this weekend.

Women of the World to be hosted in Karachi

Pakistan is lucky to be the first South Asian country to host the Women of the World festival this year and it’s happening at none other than our beloved city by the sea, Karachi. The one-day festival, which will be held at the Beach Luxury Hotel, is aimed at celebrating women and starting a discourse on the struggles they face in fulfilling their goals in life. The event will feature a series of live sessions, debates and workshops related to empowering women and voicing concerns over gender equality.

From volunteering to feminism, speed mentoring on issues to guidance on starting a business, the WOW festival will touch upon various topics that surround the modern-day woman.

The poolside will be a canvas of art installations by Sarah Pagganwala and Summaiyya Jilani whereas the Main Stage will be host to some fun performances by Nescafe Basement’s popular All Girl’s band and Sounds of Kolachi, later in the evening. Also, fitness freaks can enjoy the Zumba corner while some of us stereotype-defying activists can relax over a cuppa at the ‘behanchara’ corner – courtesy of Girls at Dhaba. The full schedule is available at the event page on Facebook.

Hamza Bhangash returns with Suno!

Taskeen – a mental health initiative – has been working hard to raise awareness on mental issues through performance art. This time around, the team brings a theatre play by Hamza Bhangash, of Baraf Paani fame, to stage at the Arts Council Karachi. A coming of age story, the play promises entertainment with a thought-provoking message. Mind you that it is not a melodramatic, depressive tale but instead a heart-warming one based on the life of Ramis Akhtar. It traces the life of its character and how he deals with a growing mental illness and eventually recovers. Even in this day and age, mental illness is more of a taboo in our country when in fact there is a need for it to be discussed and accepted socially. Join in the movement by doing your bit. The play is already underway and will continue till Saturday, April 30th.

Ali Sethi performs live

The singer who blew our minds with his rendition of ‘Umran Langiyaan’ in the last season of Coke Studio will set the stage on fire tonight at the Lahore College of Arts and Sciences. The multi-talented singer is a rare gem of classical music expertise in a rut of contemporary artists. This is not to say that the latter are not up to par, in fact pop and rock form Pakistan’s musical identity, but it is rare to see young artists steer towards classical music and in that, Sethi is an exception and exceptional!

To listen to him live, you better head to LACAS tonight. The tickets for the event are available at various place including The Last Word, Books & Beans and BYOB and are priced at PKR 1000 each.
