Prime minister seeks performance audit of K-Electric agreement

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked Nepra initiate performance audit of K-Electric Implementation Agreement (IA) and pinpoint the officials who failed to get the agreement implemented.
According to the official documents available with The News, Nepra’s fact finding report on failure of K-Electric in coping with the power crisis in Karachi was sent to Prime Minister. After going through the report, the prime minister has ordered the regulator to initiate the performance audit.
Top officials of ministry of water and power say an implementation agreement was signed with the management of KESC after the entity was privatized.
The federal government had given a grant of Rs13 billion to K-Electric to enable it to improve its power system. Under the agreement K-Electric is bound to improving electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems.
Nepra officials confirmed that the regulator has initiated the performance audit and has managed to get the required documents from the ministries of finance, water and power whose responsibility it was to monitor the implementation of the agreement. They told The News that the regulator would soon submit its audit report to the prime minister.
