Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10. This year’s theme is ‘Dignity in Mental Health’. The purpose of celebrating this day is to create awareness among people about the significance of mental health. Growing injustice, poverty, social inequality, terrorism, unemployment and other evils of society are affecting the mental health of people. Due to unawareness about mental health issues, many ignore it or deem it to be a result of black magic.
According to a survey, depression would rank third in all mental diseases by 2020. A vast number of people in our country are victims of depression. Rough estimates have put our population figure over the 200 million mark but we have very few psychiatrists to cater to such a huge population. Another problem in our country is that people come to psychiatrists after exhausting all traditional options. Issues like these need to be highlighted on this day.
