ISLAMABAD: The fedeal capital police have registered criminal case on the complaint of Chairman Bahria Town, Malik Riaz, against three persons for allegedly blackmailing him, the police sources said.
Lui Bher police have registered the case (FIR No 210) under sections 506, 384 and 388 PPC against Lt Col (R) Tariq Kamal, Lt Col (R) Khalid Rashid (sacked from army) and Dr Shafiqueur Rehman.
Malik Riaz on July 22 lodged a complaint with the police contending that a group of retired civil and army officers are blackmailing him to extort money. Riaz went to Lui Bher police station along with National Assembly deputy speaker Haji Nawaz Khokhar, his legal consultant Babar Awan and personal staff officer Lt Col (R) Khalilur Rehman and filed written application for lodging FIR.
He alleged that the three persons named in the FIR are involved in blackmailing offence and have extorted 50 million rupees from him. Khalilur Rehman, personal staff officer of Malik, submitted complaint on his behalf.
According to the complaint, the alleged blackmailers are trying to destroy reputation of Malik Riaz and Bahria Town. It states that the alleged blackmailers had already been paid once and were seeking more money. They allegedly received 50 million rupees on June 28, 2013, and assured that there would be no further blackmailing, it stated. The complaint further stated that 15 days ago, Col (R) Tariq Kamal issued another threat and asked for more money allegedly.
Speaking to the media, Babar Awan said his client Malik Riaz had submitted documents and CCTV video from his office as evidence with the written complaint. Awan said it was now responsibility of the investigators, judiciary, media and national institutions to bring forward the truth. The complaint has been submitted under 154 CrPC for lodging FIR, Awan said and added that the investigation should be conducted strictly on merit. “This is the first episode of the series of corruption, extortion and ransom while others will be disclosed according to the circumstances,” he said adding this is a test case for institutions to show commitment and seriousness for eliminating corruption.
The police authorities referred the complaint to legal branch of the Islamabad police to seek legal opinion as sections of the offences including extortion were not clear. The police registered the case under the sections proposed by the legal branch.
Online adds: Earlier, Additional District and Sessions Judge Raja Khurram Ali Khan had directed SHO Lohi Bher police station to register case against black mailers as per application filed by Malik Riaz.
Chairman Bahria Town had taken plea in his application that he was being blackmailed and he had filed application in police station Lohi Bher against this blackmailing. But no action is being taken on this application, therefore, he has resorted to the court, he contended.
