ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought details from the federal government and provinces of NGOs in the fake cheque case of a social organisation’s deputy director.
The court ordered provision of details with regard to the funding and monitoring of NGOs, the number of registrations and the areas where they are operating. Details about the procedure of registration were also sought.
A three-member bench of the apex court, presided over by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, took up the case for hearing.Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked: “The country cannot be left at the mercy of these NGOs. The motives and interest of the NGOs should also be explained.”
Additional Advocate General (AAG) Punjab Razzaq A. Mirza told the court that over 7,000 NGOs were functioning in Punjab and these were being monitored. “These NGOs are operating in different sectors,” he added. The court was told that a social organisation’s deputy director had given the cheque which proved a fake. A bail application was filed in respect of him because he was arrested, he added.
Justice Jawwad remarked: “How the monitoring of these NGOs is conducted and in what areas these are operating. What are their objectives? Only these names cannot be relied upon.” The hearing of the case was adjourned indefinitely.
