LAHORE: In a major operation, the FIA Anti-Money Laundering Circle, Lahore, has arrested Muhammad Iqbal, the prime suspect in the 2023 Libya boat tragedy.
The suspect was apprehended by FIA Immigration at Lahore Airport upon his arrival in Pakistan. His name was on the Stop List, and he had been residing in Libya since 2013, operating a human smuggling network.
Iqbal was involved in illegally sending multiple Pakistani citizens to Europe via unsafe boat routes from Libya. He also engaged in money laundering using funds collected from victims. Authorities have detected illegal transactions amounting to Rs80 million in his bank account.
The FIA Lahore Zone had registered multiple cases against him, and further arrests are expected based on his disclosures. FIA Lahore Director Sarfraz Virk stated that the crackdown on individuals involved in boat tragedies is in full swing. FIA teams remain in constant contact with victims’ families, and operations against human smuggling networks have been intensified.
The FIA spokesperson reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy against human smuggling, vowing to bring perpetrators to justice. “Those responsible for such tragedies will face severe punishments,” he added. Authorities have also pledged to dismantle human smuggling networks at the international level to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
