ISLAMABAD: A request was made to the Supreme Court on Tuesday to revoke the privileges being extended to the families of the judges who had sentenced former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to death.
Muhammad Khalid Awan, a private citizen, filed a petition in the Supreme Court under Article 184(3) of the Constitution, naming the Federation of Pakistan through the secretary of the Ministry of Law and Justice as the respondent.
The petitioner requested the apex court to take cognizance of the atrocities committed against Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, ensure accountability for those responsible for his wrongful conviction and execution, and uphold the principles of justice and fairness for all, in the interest of justice.
He further requested that the names of the late judges involved in this injustice be recorded and that all privileges extended to their families be revoked.
He submitted that the recent landmark judgment by the Supreme Court, which declared that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto did not receive justice, serves as a stark reminder of the grave miscarriage of justice that took place decades ago.
He argued that it is evident the judges of that time, in collusion with a power-hungry general and external opposition forces, had orchestrated a heinous plot to wrongfully convict and execute an innocent man who had dedicated his life to serving Pakistan and its people.
