ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Sunday made significant changes to his cabinet, reassigning the power portfolio to Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, who previously oversaw the railways ministry. This decision comes amidst growing challenges in the power sector, requiring a strong leadership.

Simultaneously, Secretary Rashid Mahmood Langrial has been reassigned to the Power Division.

Langrial, known for his diligent work ethic, was previously the additional secretary (in charge) of the Industries and Production Division.

This move aims to capitalize on the expertise of both the minister and secretary in tackling the pressing issues in the power sector.

Sources said Leghari’s previous experience as the power minister in 2017, during a time of extensive power outages, testifies to his ability to manage the sector effectively. His return to this portfolio signifies a strategic move by the prime minister to address the current challenges.

In a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif relieved Federal Minister for Petroleum Musadiq Masood Malik of his additional responsibility of power, signaling a streamlined focus on the sector. Leghari previously served as the federal minister for power during the tenure of the then prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Additionally, the federal government announced the transfer and posting of Rashid Mahmood Langrial, a BS-21 officer of Pakistan Administrative Services, to the position of secretary Power Division.

His experience in leading the countrywide drive against the power theft has been instrumental in curbing the losses and recovering dues from defaulters. Under his directions as secretary Power Division, the government initiated a vigorous campaign against power theft in August 2023, resulting in significant recoveries and legal actions against offenders.

This effort has contributed to mitigating the power sector’s circular debt, providing a semblance of control over the situation.
