Political rallies taken out by the PTI and the JI reflect both positive and negative signs in the democratic development in Pakistan. It is because of democracy that the rulers are being publicly asked to explain their offshore investments. Also, the opposition is free to criticise and demand accountability of the rulers. On the other hand, the country has suffered economic losses in the tune of billions of rupees due to sit-ins and violent demonstrations. Political instability has led many investors to transfer their money abroad.
The Panama Papers have neither confirmed nor denied if the money was stolen or transferred abroad by illegal channels. However, some leaders are hurling accusations of corruption at the ruling elite without producing any evidence. Industrialists have been making investment in foreign countries due to lack of security and unfriendly business environment in the country. However, the adverse political situation in Pakistan does not absolve the present rulers from their responsibility to come clean on their sources of investments offshore. The opposition is thus fully justified in demanding a forensic inquiry.
