ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of India will give its verdict today (Monday) against or in favor of the Modi government’s decision to end the special status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIJIOK) under Article 370.
It should be remembered that the five-member bench of the Supreme Court, after hearing the petitions against the abrogation of Article 370 for 16 days in August this year, reserved the verdict.
The Modi government on August 5, 2019 had abrogated the special staus through a bill in parliament.
Restrictions, coupled with extensive searches, have been intensified across occupied Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the Indian Supreme Court’s verdict on the abrogation of Article 370.
The verdict is scheduled to be announced today (Monday). Indian troops have been deployed in strength in and around crucial installations, including the secretariat and airport to prevent anti-India protests.
Srinagar is witnessing excessive checkpoints and roadblocks, with intensified searches.
“Personnel of the police and Central Reserve Police Force have been patrolling in larger numbers. Indian forces’ personnel are conducting searches in the city,” said Shoib Hameed, a resident of Srinagar.
Additionally, the deployment of bulletproof mobile bunker vehicles at sensitive locations has been increased and high-tech CCTV surveillance has been enhanced.
After a long period of almost four years, following the demands of leaders of opposition parties in Occupied Kashmir and strong reaction of the Kashmiris, in August this year, the Indian Supreme Court started a joint hearing of more than 20 petitions against the abrogation of Article 370. The trial lasted for weeks and the verdict was reserved. Now, after a period of three months, the five-judge bench of the court will deliver its important verdict on Monday.
In view of the importance of this decision, all eyes are fixed on the Supreme Court and the opposition political parties in the Kashmir Valley are optimistic about the decision of the court. They expect the court will do justice to the people of Jammu and Kashmir while the common people at large are uncertain about the Indian SC decision.
Regarding the decision, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and PDP President Ghulam Nabi Azad said that they had absolutely no hope from Prime Minister Modi on the restoration of Article 370 and 35A, because his government had abrogated the valley’s constitutional status. But they definitely expected that the five-member bench of the Supreme Court will give a decision in favor of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He said that Maharaja Hari Singh had kept the right of Kashmiris to jobs and lands, taking into account the sentiments of people of Jammu and Kashmir. The decision of the Supreme Court will determine the future of people of Jammu and Kashmir, he added.
