I read with some alarm the recent statement by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, calling for a “peaceful atmosphere” in the build up to the upcoming elections in February 2024. What is Maulana Fazl really angling for here? The fact is that in most of Pakistan there are no problems at all and elections should be carried out as normal. Extra security may be provided in constituencies where there is a heightened threat of violence and/or elections can be held in a staggered manner to avoid any untoward events.
It is very important that we have proper elections soon and move on from the current situation. All political parties should firmly agree to this and we should all support timely voting. No more tricks and stratagems by cynical old politicians.
