The fabulous 40s

BEAUTY

Beauty cannot be restricted by age. A few things that make getting older so beautiful are that you feel more comfortable in your own skin, could care less what people think, and don’t waste your energy on drama. But keeping yourself beautiful in your 40s takes work. If the idea of a total overhaul in your 40s is a little daunting, don’t worry - that’s not what we're suggesting. It’s probably not even necessary. Instead, we invite you to tweak your look. Try a great new lipstick. Get a totally hot haircut. Beef up your eyebrows etc. The key to applying makeup in your 40s is hydration. Hydrating the skin pre-application gives it a more youthful and plump appearance from the start. This week we have compiled some alluring beauty tips to keep you stay lovely in your 40s…

For a dewy skin: Build a skincare regimen and stick to it as your skin needs nourishment and moisturisation more than ever to maintain suppleness. Moisturisation is the key to soft and supple and healthy skin in your 40s. Moisturise it well and you can keep those laugh lines and crow feet at bay. Start using eye cream and night cream along with your regular skincare products. Your skin will stay as young as it was back in your 30s or even 20s and you will thank us for this.

Invest in cream-based foundation and makeup to create a natural glow: As women age, their collagen production slows down and so does oil production, so that can definitely make a difference on how makeup wears on the skin. For most women, the skin tends to get drier as we mature, so using cream or liquid foundations with more moisture is a plus. Cream-based products like cream blushes and cream highlighters can be used to bring that instant radiance.

Conceal and correct: As you enter your 40s and move ahead, you have a newfound respect for the concealers and colour correctors. The perfect mates to your foundation, right from dark circles to under eye bags, blemishes and marks, they can hide it all efficiently. Invest in the right concealers and correctors for your skin tone and type. Yellow and orange correctors are best for our skin tone which has yellow and olive undertone mostly.

Play up your eyes: Use eye make-up to define your eyes and accentuate them. Don’t go overboard with products. Strong hard lines can give a heavy appearance to the eye, while a softer line gives a more open and youthful appearance.

For lush lashes and brows: You must pay attention to your eyebrows and eye lashes in your 40s as these babies play an important role when it comes to looking good. Do not forget to curl your lashes. This step is a must since it opens your eyes and makes them look big and beautiful.

Full eyebrows frame the face and give it structure. Unfortunately, in your 40s, brows start getting sparser. Fill in any gaps with a powder pencil, like Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre Powder Pencil for the Brows. This is a good thing because it makes your—full! thick! lush!—brows also look totally real.

Wear thick mascara for an instant eye lift: Wear lengthening and volumising mascara to make eyes look more awake and to add a touch of sexy youthfulness immediately. L’Oreal Paris is a classic volumizing formula that makes lashes appear thick and fluffy without getting flaky or smudging. Also, don’t give up on eyeliner as it gives wonderful definition to the eyes.

For fuller lips: Another concern for many women who are in their 40s and over is thinning lips. To create the illusion of fuller lips without looking overdrawn, use a neutral toned lipliner to enhance their shape before applying lipstick. Makeup artist Bobbi Brown suggests avoid matte lipsticks as they tend to settle into your lip lines. Instead, try creamier lipsticks or glosses. Glosses are especially youthful and can make your lips appear fuller.

Long, almond-shaped nails: You may have outgrown nail art, but that doesn’t mean you’re relegated to a life of proper colours and supposedly ladylike lengths. Step one: Let your nails grow out. Step two: File the sides toward the center like you’re creating a point, then round the tip into an almond shape. Step three: Paint on a racy red, opaque nude, or almost-black burgundy polish. The result? A grown-up manicure that’s a little badass, very sexy, and not at all boring.

Get Layered: Sexy? Yep. Sophisticated? That too. Cool without trying? Absolutely. Jennifer Garner's shaggy layers and choppy bangs look like a perfect hairstyle -at any age. The cut truly works on all hair textures and face shapes.

Some inspiring celebrities in their 40s

Beautiful, talented and successful actresses like Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Drew Barrymore, Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Amy Adams, Keeley Hawes and Jennifer Garner who are in their 40s are proving, life truly blossoms in this decade of life. Aside from getting past the drama and indecision of your 20s and 30s, your 40s is when you truly start to feeling comfortable in your body, are at ease with your flaws and can shine your brightest.

Just like Drew Barrymore, who - once a troubled child star - now has her own make-up line and her own chat show. Or Keeley Hawes, who, after an initial hit of fame starring on Spooks early on in her career, has since carved a name for herself in her 40s playing a range of gripping TV roles. The British actress is currently one of the most in-demand actors in the business.

Likewise Angelina Jolie has been cited as one of the most influential women in the world. She also cited as one of the most powerful people in the USA entertainment industry, as well as the world’s most beautiful woman, by various media outlets. In addition to her acting career, she is noted for her humanitarian work. Then there's Kate Winslet - she'll always be Rose from ‘Titanic’ to us, - but it's in her forties that her career is actually going from strength to strength with grittier roles. Gwyneth Paltrow, actress, author and mother of two kids, proves that being over 40 is no barrier to being hot and successful.
