Natasha Kamal has been designing beautiful clothes for six years. Natasha who is a law graduate says that she has always been drawn towards fashion since she was in school. “Although I always drew fashion illustrations during high school, I never thought it would be my career,” tells Natasha. “I always wanted to wear that really fit and flattered my body but was also minimal and quality based. So, I delved into the world of designing and experimenting. One thing led to another and it took a life of its own.

And finally, I was able to launch my label in 2014,” adds Natasha. Since then Natasha has participated in several fashion shows/weeks including PFDC, FPW and Showcase. She has also showcased at Torino Fashion week and Paris Fashion Week. She has a studio in Lahore and stock with Karachi Ensemble as well. This week the talented designer talks to You! regarding her work and shares some exciting beauty secrets with our readers…

You! When did you first show your collection?

Natasha Kamal: My first runway show was PFDC 2015. It was called ‘La Nouvele Espirit’ and I showcased my signature layered organza ruffles.

You! What is your design philosophy?

NK: I have a minimalistic approach. Every design is an application of reinterpreting time treasured techniques in modernising traditional classics.

You! What type of clothes you design for women?

NK: NK is all about fit, fabric, finish and feel. I design contemporary, elegant clothes for women with a slight experimental flare for fashion.

You! What do you like best about designing clothes?

NK: Seeing my idea come to life. Constructing a design that started from a mere sketched concept.

You! What was the first outfit that you designed?

NK: My first task was to achieve constructing an essential: well-tailored trousers. Then I started experimenting with designs.

You! How would you define your own sense of style?

NK: Neutral and minimalist. Due to the current corona situation I’d say very casual.

You! What is your signature embellishment and fabric choice?

NK: It was this self-discovery that made me realise that your heritage is never passé – it’s always there for you to draw upon and create something new each time. I am known for my ‘gota’ and cutwork incorporating the stylish textural duo of silk and net.

You! What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?

NK: Creating a ready to wear collection that could easily transition from work to a luncheon. My latest collection featured solid hued tunics in cotton net textural duos juxtaposed against my first collection of vibrant printed silk duppattas.

You! Tell us about how you developed your aesthetic?

NK: My aesthetic was cultivated by my exposure to fashion. Somehow, I have always been drawn to neutrals and minimalist lines.

You! Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them?

NK: It depends on the design, and what it requires. However, construction is the true test of your conceptual sketch.

You! What seasonal looks and colours are you expecting this summer?

NK: Neon hues in solid matching separates, an array of blues and less noisy lawn to beat the summer heat.

You! What is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here?

NK: Not dressing for your own body type.

You! What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why?

NK: A peplum top.

You! What are the difficulties faced by designers in getting their work done?

NK: Apart from designing, a large part is actually having the design manufactured while maintaining quality and SOPs. It’s not always as glamorous as it seems.

You! What are the high points and low points of being a designer?

NK: You always put out your work to be judged by the world. Knowing that it appeals to a set audience and is appreciated is quite gratifying.

You! How long does it usually take for you to design an outfit?

NK: If inspiration strikes, it could take a day. For others it could take a week.

You! How do you prepare for a fashion show?

NK: Mood boards, colour palettes, sketches, experimental construction/techniques and loads of sampling. Once the designs start coming together it’s all about completing the full look and fittings.

You! What are you currently working on?

NK: Currently working on a luxury pret collection featuring custom laser cut fabrications.

You! Your biggest accomplishment so far:

NK: 1st place Luxury Award at Torino Fashion week by LVMG Jurors and Sim de la Mode.

You! What kind of future plans do you foresee for your brand?

NK: Opening multiple outlets for the pret range would be a priority but I also hope to see a larger market for my bespoke pieces.
