Even though, Japanese food culture has been influenced by the customs of other nations, the cuisine has been refined over a period of time to create unique style of cooking. Were you aware of the fact that around 300 B.C.  China was the first foreign influence on Japan? It was then that the Japanese learned to cultivate rice. It was due to the rise of Buddhism in the A.D. 700s, which led to a ban on eating meat. And the popular dish, sushi (raw fish with rice) came as a result of this ban. In the 1800s, cooking styles became simpler. Western foods, such as bread, coffee, and ice cream, became popular during the late twentieth century.

Recently, we got the chance to experience authentic dishes at the Japanese food festival held at Fujiyama, Avari Towers, from 10th to 19th February 2017. The main aim was to take food enthusiasts on gastronomically inspired festivals from around the globe. According to Food and Beverage Manager, Emmanuel Riggi, “As Fujiyana is the first Japanese restaurant in Karachi, the management thought it was important to celebrate the Japanese National Day, which is observed annually in Japan on 11th February.”

For the opening of the Food Festival, Japanese Consul General, His Excellency Toshikazu Isomura came for the ribbon cutting ceremony. The traditional atmosphere of the restaurant was re-enforced by the addition of typical pictures of Japanese landscape. A real temple entrance lead us inside the restaurant and the decor took us on a journey of traditional villages in the mountains to the vibrant and exciting Tokyo city.

With its black and red lacquer, tasteful design and most importantly its amazing traditional food, the restaurant has reinvented Japanese cuisine in Karachi. The location is magnificent; the sky rise view on the top floor of the 17 storey hotel, looking out through wide, open windows towards the city will put you under its spell. And if you visit at night, the city lights will surely add a perfect backdrop to your authentic meal.

Now the best part, the food! You start off with the Miso Soup. Then there is fresh sashimi, sushi and tiny appetizers to tease one’s palate, followed by a series of elaborate and very delicately flavoured hot and cold dishes. Also, the menu ranges from Teppanyaki assorted dishes to Grilled Beef or Prawn Teriyaki for those who prefer grilled items. For seafood lovers there is an unrivalled selection from Prawn Tempura, Grilled Squid, Tuna Steaks or the Zesty Seafood Carpaccio served with Garlic and Olive Oil.

Desserts include ‘Matcha Icecream’, seasonal fruits and banana spring rolls or one can enjoy a cup of ice lemon tea, coffee or fresh juices. Dining at the Fujiyama is certainly a memorable experience for food lovers, sushi enthusiasts and individuals who are looking to try something new.

The festival is over now, but if you want to try authentic Japanese cuisine, you know where to go!
