Workin’ Moms (2023)

Celebrate Mom with a movie marathon

Four women juggle love, careers, and parenthood. They support, challenge, and try not to judge one another as life launches curveballs at them like identity crises, postpartum depression, huge career opportunities, or unplanned pregnancies. The sitcom, set in modern-day Toronto, follows the lives of five moms who form unusual friendships through a very insightful, yet provocative class ‘Mommy and Me’ - a judgmental mommies’ group class. The show follows their difficult path of urban motherhood, which is packed with the turmoil of kids, highs and lows, careers, marriage, and identity issues, all while attempting to reach the holy grail: a sense of self.

Mother’s Day (2016)

Well, this is an obvious choice! ‘Mother’s Day’ is another holiday ensemble film from the late, great director Garry Marshall and features an A-list cast. Sandy (Jennifer Aniston) is a stressed-out single mother who discovers her ex-husband has married a younger woman. Jesse (Kate Hudson) is a fitness fanatic who keeps her family a secret from her parents. Bradley (Jason Sudeikis) is a widower attempting to raise two girls on his own, while Miranda (Julia Roberts) is too preoccupied with her profession to consider having children. When their respective problems reach a boiling point, the Mother’s Day holiday takes on a new turn. It’s the perfect movie to pop on if you and Mom are in the mood for a feel-good rom-com.

Daughter From Another Mother (2022)

The show (Spanish: Madre sólo hay dos) is a 2021 Mexican streaming television series. After realising their babies were exchanged at birth, two women develop a plan to adjust to their new lives, creating a single - and peculiar - family. It is not difficult to come across cheesy, dramatic television shows to spend a few hours on. A mix of cheesiness, unnecessary drama, and ridiculous twists and turns in the plot, and voila! A show filled with stories that will probably never happen in real life, which is what makes it even more fun and interesting to watch.

Pieces of a Woman (2020)

Celebrate Mom with a movie marathon

The story of a heart-breaking home birth leaves a woman grappling with the profound emotional fallout, isolated from her partner and family by a chasm of grief. Martha (Vanessa Kirby) and Sean (Shia LaBeouf) are a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably when a home birth ends in unimaginable tragedy. Thus, begins a yearlong journey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through shaky relationships with Sean and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn), along with the publicly vilified midwife (Molly Parker), whom she must face in court. This one is a solid movie with some pretty impressive performances.

If Anything Happens I Love You (2020)

Celebrate Mom with a movie marathon

In this Oscar-winning short film, grieving parents journey through an emotional void as they mourn the loss of a child after a tragic school shooting. An American 2D animated short film, written and directed by Will McCormack and Michael Govier. A beautifully illustrated animation that takes us on an extraordinary emotional journey of two parents struggling to overcome the hurt left by a tragic event that leaves their family changed forever. It is a stunning tale that compares the excruciating pain one can feel as well as the resilience of the human spirit. The short film is a touching experience for anyone who has ever loved and lost.

Dumplin’ (2018)

Celebrate Mom with a movie marathon

A teen beauty pageant sets the stage for a variety of maternal relationships in Anne Fletcher’s Dumplin’, a coming-of-age comedy. Danielle Macdonald stars as Willowdean Dickson, an overweight teenager who has a fraught relationship with her mother (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen, and was raised mostly by her aunt Lucy (Hilliary Begley). In an act of rebellion following the death of her aunt, Willowdean enters the local pageant over which her mother presides. In navigating the competition, she finds guidance from unlikely sources, and confidence from the unlikeliest place of all - within herself. There’s a scene of a makeover montage and like so much in this film, this makeover comes with a refreshingly smart, funny, wise, and warmhearted twist. Dumplin' is a feel-good delight, and it makes for a wonderful mother-daughter movie.
