You might find a slight difference in shades than usual, but the gloomy weather of this season will be filled with shades of green, yellow, blue, orange, red, and brown....

Nailing the perfect hue can completely change the vibes of a T-shirt-denim combo, a great dress or any other look. “Colour plays an essential role in our day-to-day lives,” says Shakaila Forbes-Bell, a fashion psychologist and the author of Big Dress Energy: How Fashion Psychology Can Transform Your Wardrobe and Your Confidence. She adds that “experimenting with colour is a risk worth taking” because, like most things, colour doesn’t have a one-size fits all approach. “Colour-related emotions are incredibly dependent on personal preferences and people’s past experiences with colour,” Forbes-Bell explains.

While fall/winter fashion trends usually come with neutral colours and earth tones, this year’s colour trends are a lot more vibrant. Expect to see a whole lot of striking colours and sets around every corner of the colour trends winter 2022. You might find a slight difference in shades than usual, but the gloomy weather of this season will be filled with shades of green, yellow, blue, orange, red, and brown.

An overview of the colour palette, proposed by the great international fashion brands and the Pantone Institute for the coming winter, reflects an extensive range of very versatile, revitalising, energetic and optimistic colours, strongly inspired by nature. As a whole, they denote a greater openness due to the colour and more luminosity than in previous winters, ranging from pastel and light options, to saturated and deep. According to the Pantone Color Institute, this season’s colours “illustrate our need to break free of restraint and embrace the joy of being alive through super bright hues expressing energy-boosting vitality and the celebration of life”. “Colours for winter 2022 provide a variety of choices that complement our lifestyle of constant reinvention and represent a promise of re-emergence,” states Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “As we move forward into an environment filled with contradiction, hues for Autumn/Winter 2022/2023 enable consumers to move fluidly between a range of contrasting shades, allowing them to spontaneously express who they are and how they feel on any given day,” she adds.

According to fashion’s top designers, we’re in for a very regal 2022. Just look at the colour palette! Royal purple, jewel-tone teal, and burning red are all trending hues incorporated on the winter 2022 runways, each with its glamorous style. There is no denying the fact that trends are born from the runway each season but don’t truly come alive until they’re taken to the streets. According to this season’s street stylers, the best winter colours in 2022 are bright and beautiful, from head-to-toe oranges and zesty lime greens to classic autumnal browns and greys. If you consider yourself more of a colour minimalist, let this be the season where you colour outside the lines and into your wardrobes.

DOWNTOWN BROWN

A VIBRANT WINTER

There is no doubt that brown tones are some of the most fashionable colours of winter 2022. Downtown brown is a metropolitan grounded shade of brown. “When paired with blues and greens - which signify earth and water - a brown hue can help you stay grounded,” explains Forbes-Bell. This chic brown can well be a staple of your cold-weather wardrobe.

BURGUNDY

A VIBRANT WINTER

Burgundy is this year’s alternative to black and grey, and it sits somewhere between being a neutral and a statement colour. Head to toe burgundy is completely on trend, but it’s a hue that can be mixed with other neutrals, and also sits comfortably with the other key colours of the season, cobalt blue and emerald green.

PUNCHY YELLOW

A VIBRANT WINTER

The ultimate colour of cheerfulness and hope, inspiring us to look at the brighter picture, involves a lot of sunshine tones like deeper mustard seed tones, golden yellows, and a bright canary. Often linked to feelings of joy, a punchy yellow or marigold color helps evoke optimism and cheer. “When wearing a warm yellow colour, it may not only attract others but help you step out of your comfort zone,” says Forbes-Bell.

LILAC

A VIBRANT WINTER

Every fashion maven who favours the feminine has for the past few seasons been enjoying a love affair with dusty pink, but now that affair is over – and it’s time to move on to the newest soft shade of the season: lilac. Gentle, sweet, playful yet unassuming, lilac is the key colour of the season and it’s going to be everywhere. Casual shalwar kameez suits and blazers, leisure wear, jeans and jumpers – even footwear is favouring this prettiest of hues. Don’t be afraid to embrace your new love either: top to toe lilac is completely on trend. This pastel shade, a softer version of Pantone’s colour of the year, Very Peri, is one of the most worn by influencers, stars and fashionistas. And let’s face it, we too have literally lost our minds over this chic colour trend, which seems to have been born to be a trend for the winter season too.

COBALT BLUE

A VIBRANT WINTER

Blue is undoubtedly one of fashion’s favourite hues from seasons past and remains a staple on the runways for Fall/Winter. Cobalt blue is a colour that suits almost everyone. Neither warm nor cold, this shade complements dark skin tones. A cobalt blue dress, oversized shirt, pants, sweater, and jacket – you’re going to want them all. Cobalt blue won’t just elevate your neutral autumn/winter wardrobe; it’ll lift your spirits and really make you stand out in the crowd.

EMERALD

A VIBRANT WINTER

Striking and breath-taking, you definitely need emerald in your wardrobe this winter. Emerald green is bold and deliberate, with overtones of refreshing luxe. The key to incorporating emerald green into your look is to think of it as the statement piece. Team an emerald sweater with black or neutral pants; add an emerald green blazer over a grey dress for work; or finish off a neutral jeans and shirt combo with a vibrant emerald pair of shoes and handbag.

FUCHSIA

A VIBRANT WINTER

Fuchsia is inviting, a boost of optimism, of concentrated energy. If you prefer bolder colour and are into dopamine dressing, add fuchsia to your winter closet. Fuchsia is a flirtatious shade of pink with allure. You can mix it with contrasting colours as well as with neutrals, but if you want to bring out your personality, go for a total look (Valentino docet!). This new version of pink is perfect for winter women, as it is a bright and cold tone that brings out the best in your features making them shine like never before.

CRIMSON

A VIBRANT WINTER

Red’s second cousin, crimson is bold and lively winter colour that you simply must include in your capsule wardrobe this year. And it’s perfect for making our neutral or dark autumn/winter outfits really pop. Think dark, rich and mysterious, and being a classic hue it is entirely at home in all situations.
