Paving way for inclusion

Iqra University Corporate Social Responsibility (IUCSR) works on social issues and caters to philanthropic aspects. “We proposed that we need accessibility for students on wheelchairs who had a hard time getting around. Our in-house engineer and architect worked on the project.

The ramp was implemented recently allowing us to welcome our first guests from Disabled Welcome Association (DWA),” shared IUCSR Patron, Ms Varah Musavvir.

Eat for a cause

Can a country move forward, progress and prosper without providing quality education to her citizens? Highly impossible! Hence, providing education to the less privileged segment of society is the responsibility of the government. Unfortunately, most of the time government cannot do as much as it should, and that is where multinationals and big businesses can chip in.

Laila Dossa, chairperson Noor-e-Ali Trust JS Academy for the Deaf

Mövenpick Hotel, Karachi recently took part in a global CSR campaign “Kilo of Kindness” which focuses on assistance of underprivileged sections of the society. Kilo of Kindness for a treat of ice cream encouraged public to donate by offering them a free scoop of Mövenpick ice cream. The hotel set-up a donation facility where guests and people visiting the hotel were encouraged to donate cash or learning supplies. The collected donations were given to JS Academy for hearing and speech impaired.

JS Academy, functioning for the past 14 years, has achieved a high ranking in deaf education in Pakistan. To date, over 180 students have received education at the academy. In her speech, Ms Dossa pointed out how difficult it is for differently-abled people to get jobs.

Mirza Mansoor, General Manager, of the hotel, instantly responded by instructing the HR department to give jobs to deserving students of JS Academy in various departments of the hotel. “We strongly feel that education is a driving force which can make futures and benefit the whole household. We are happy to contribute towards the educational landscape of our city and promise to take many more positive steps towards it.”

200 kilograms of school supplies including arts and craft material and learning equipment was donated to the school.
