Dear Ed,

I really appreciate the clean look of the cover story “MVXII Sigh” (Dec 29). If I talk about the content, I would say it was terrific. The write up wasn’t just a list of events that happened in 2017; it was intellectual and provocative, too!

Hello Editor,

Kudos for printing “Lights, cameras and lots of films”. As a photographer, I have always been passionate about making films. Though I have never tried making a proper short film, I occasionally upload random videos on my social media. The problem that most of the filmmakers faced was lack of equipment. I truly agree that without using high quality equipment you can’t produce content that could attract millions of viewers. But I was surprised when Rabi mentioned he shot most of the scenes with his iPhone and the entire movie was made under a budget of Rs. 6000. I am sure One Shot must have been a great movie since it qualified for screening at Bahria Short Film Festival ’17. I felt really inspired after reading the experiences of these young filmmakers. Good job, guys!

Authentically Green

Hi Ed,

Turtles all the way down is another great book by John Green. In her review “Freakishly cute” (Dec 5), Saniyah has rightfully praised the way Green represented anxiety and yes it feels so realistic. You can quickly get into the mind of Aza – the main character in the story – and understand what she is going through. And teen relationships are also discussed in a very touching way.

And if you are familiar with John Green’s style of building a story, you will enjoy the book more.

Dear Ed,

Treasure online in last week’s issue (12 Jan) was a real treasure trove for students like me who are not allowed to pursue higher education formally. In my family, girls get basic education from prestigious all girls schools but, after that, they are compelled to study as private candidates, which does not give them a lot of options. Thanks for such an informative article on online learning.

Opinion

Dear Ed,

Every time I see a good piece of art on the back page of Us, or an interesting article, I thank God for giving our country such talented writers and artists! The art work on the back page is usually very impressive, but I believe that if you use glossy paper, it would really work wonders for the artists. In the online version, the art work looks very different from what I see in the print version, which does not do justice to the efforts put in by the young artists.

Reflection

Narrated by Abdullah (R.A)

When the verse: It is those who believe and do not confuse their belief with wrong (i.e. joining others in worship with Allah (6.83) was revealed, we said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Who is there amongst us who has not done wrong to himself?” He replied, “It is not as you say, for “wrong” in the verse and do not confuse their belief, with wrong means shirk (i.e. joining others in worship with Allah). Haven’t you heard Luqman’s saying to his son, “O my son! Join not others in worship with Allah, verily joining others in worship with Allah is a great wrong indeed.” (31.13)
