Stand up for children

Hello Ed,

Children are the assets of any society and they determine the future of that society. Thus, their physical and mental health should be a prime concern. Child abuse is a global challenge issue which needs to be addressed.

All forms of child abuse need to be addressed in order to prevent them. Any form of physical or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or any kind of exploitation resulting in actual or potential harm to the child’s health and dignity is considered as child abuse. The problem is children don’t discuss their problems with adults.

The consequences of physical abuse range from minor injuries to severe brain damage and even death. Emotional abuse results in significant psychological harm to the child. Its consequences range from chronic low self-esteem to severe dissociative states. No culture or socioeconomic class is immune. Denial won’t change the reality. The least we can do is educate ourselves and understand that even our own child is at risk.

Feedback

Dear Editor,

I have been reading Us for a long time. It is good, slim and great for reading. I enjoy almost all articles and stories, especially ‘Bits ‘n’ pieces’ and ‘Poets’ corner’. Bits ‘n’ pieces is just like the ‘Graffiti’ page you discontinued, but I think it was a bit more interesting. I used to love reading ‘graffiti’ in this section.

Hey Ed,

Vet to the rescue (Oct 13) by Sameen Amer was surely an informative piece! Veterinary Medicine is undoubtedly an interesting and rewarding career path. But, we don’t have enough institutions in Pakistan where we can get formal education; plus, in school and colleges, teachers and career counsellors never talk about this field. I don’t think Karachi has any place where veterinary science is taught properly.

And yes, many people Pakistan who own pets like cats, parrots or rabbits don’t really bother about their health. They just feed them and give them a place to rest, and that’s it! Unfortunately, many don’t even know that these innocent creatures need regular checkups and need to be vaccinated properly.

I have observed that when pets get sick, people sell them. How cruel is that! People need to be educated in this regard.

Query

Salam Ed,

I want to send articles; what should be the word count?

Romesa Jamshed

Just see whatever you write is for our target audience: youth. The word count for one page is 550-650 words, for a two-page story it is 1100-1200. And, you can email your articles or stories to us.mag@thenews.com.pk.

US MAILReflection

Narrated by Tarif Abi Tamima (R.A)

I saw Safwan and Jundab and Safwan’s companions when Jundab was advising. They said, “Did you hear something from Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W)?” Jundab said, “I heard him saying, ‘Whoever does a good deed in order to show off, Allah will expose his intentions on the Day of Resurrection (before the people), and whoever puts the people into difficulties, Allah will put him into difficulties on the Day of Resurrection.’” The people said (to Jundab), “Advise us.” He said, “The first thing of the human body to purify is the abdomen, so he who can eat nothing but good food (halal and earned lawfully) should do so, and he who does as much as he can that nothing intervene between him and Paradise by not shedding even a handful of blood, (i.e. murdering) should do so.”
