Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
Dean Fleischer Camp and Jenny Slate’s feature-length adaptation of their animated shorts continues the story of the endearing Marcel (voiced by Slate), a mollusc with a single googly eye, two little shoes, and a warm heart.
The live-action/stop-motion hybrid takes the shape of a mockumentary that finds filmmaker Dean (portrayed by Camp) discovering Marcel in the house he is renting and then recording the resourceful shell’s very unusual tale.
The titular protagonist, it turns out, has been separated from his family after the human couple who previously owned the house split up and one of them accidentally packed and took the rest of the shells with him, leaving just Marcel and his ailing grandmother, Connie (Isabella Rossellini), behind. After Dean uploads the video he makes about Marcel, the clip goes viral, bringing with it attention both intrusive and heartening, and renewing his hope that he will be reunited with his family.
A touching tale of loss and resilience, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a heartfelt little gem that packs a big emotional punch. This unique, gentle dramedy is charming from start to finish, and makes sure that Marcel and his child-like charm not only win you over but hit you right in the feels.
