Going on 30

INTROSPECTION

Here are some lessons from a decade of teenage years as I reach the infamous thirty. But, thankfully, all the more self-aware, grateful and wiser, I suppose.

Choose your battles

The most important thing to learn is to choose your enemies and battles wisely. Because as time passes by, you will realise that not every fight is worth it. Some things are out of your control and some people will never change. No matter how much you try, you can’t change your circumstances, and you will see how so many things won’t matter after some time.

So if there are people who are destroying your peace, let them go. Choose not to waste your energy on a lost cause that is beyond resolution. You are bigger than that.

Choose your clan wisely

You've probably heard the saying, 'man is known by the company he keeps'. Because over the years, the people you choose to spend time with eventually become your thoughts and your motivation to strive for betterment in life. And you need people who are self-sufficient and confident so that they can radiate the same energy. If you invest in superficial relationships based on small talk and petty competitions, you will soon feel drained and emotionally shattered. So it's best to find people who are grounded, content and optimistic.

Embrace your beauty

You are beautiful. Did you smile when you read that? It's because it is true. You are beautiful! And the sooner you realise it, the better. You are beautiful. You are enough. You are capable of anything you put your mind to. When you realise your flaws make you unique, only then will you be able live confidently. Don’t follow beauty standards set by the society; otherwise, you'll just end up feeling inadequate.

Invest in knowledge

Invest your time and money in acquiring new skills and be open to experimentation. Always listen to other people’s perspective, find out ancient ways of life, read books and watch movies to understand life from a completely different angle. Your curiosity will help you lead a fulfilling life.

Create your own joy

Accept that no one is responsible for your happiness but you. You are in control of how a certain situation makes you feel. You can't wait for others to make you feel happy or do your part of healing. Your journey is yours. And once you create your own joy, you become invincible. The world will no longer be upsetting to you even if you experience a loss or suffer at the hand of a bully.

Don’t let anger consume you. Look beyond negative emotions and make your happiness a priority. Do little things: go for a walk, write in a journal, have a cup of coffee or just breathe to feel happy.
