What’s wrong with Hamza Ali Abbasi or rather, what’s right with him is what you’d ask, depending on what side you’re on? Right or wrong, the ‘former’ heart throb has taken on the responsibility to teach, rather preach, all that is apparently ‘wrong’ with the Pakistani film industry. The once amiable actor and definite heartthrob seems to be the new moral brigade in town.
What’s wrong with Hamza Ali Abbasi or rather, what’s right with him is what you’d ask, depending on what side you’re on? Right or wrong, the ‘former’ heart throb has taken
on the responsibility to teach, rather preach, all that is apparently ‘wrong’ with the Pakistani film industry. The once amiable actor and definite heartthrob seems to be the new moral brigade in town.
In a recent interview given to Masala.com in Dubai, Abbasi claims that ‘item songs are not Pakistani’ and points towards the ‘bollywood-ization’ of the Pakistani film industry. “Let’s admit it. We have different cultural values, morals and ethics compared to India. India has a brilliant culture but it’s their culture. We should not copy the culture of another country,” he said.
Interestingly, Abbasi’s ethical reincarnation seems to be limited to holier-than-thou statements, whether it’s his statement about ‘women in bikinis’ in his upcoming and much spoken about film Jawani Phir Na Ani or his resignation as the cultural secretary for PTI due to the film choices he was making. The actor’s critical viewpoints seem to be the talk of the social media these days; one can only hope they don’t become his only claim to fame.
He may be right in his statements, every now and then, but Abbasi’s comments come in bad taste because they constantly pass judgment on others.
is statements leave more than just a bitter aftertaste when one realizes that he would much rather talk about the bikini clad women in his upcoming flick or question Ayesha Omar’s dance in her upcoming film Karachi Se Lahore but not bat an eyelid at his own shirtless scenes in Jawani Phir Na Ani.
Is this a publicity stunt or does Hamza Abbasi really believe in what he’s saying because if he does, he comes across as a regressive chauvinist more than anything else. His commentary appears to be directed at women only and perhaps he’d be better off signing up as Cultural Ambassador for Junaid Jamshed.
IPL Commences With A Star-Studded Opening Ceremony
Amidst the torrential downpour that seemed to be ready to wreak havoc, IPL 2015 officially kicked off. Kolkata appeared drenched yet the excitement could not be contained
as some of the biggest Bollywood stars and equally mesmerizing cricketers took to the stage to officially launch this year’s Indian Premier League Tournament.
As the rain continued to delay the original plans, the Salt Lake stadium packed with more people and even more umbrellas. Eventually after one and a half hour of delay, the ceremony finally began.
With the Nawab of Pataudi Saif Ali Khan, as the official anchor of the show; the night remained star-studded regardless of the actual gray skies.
“Rain or shine the celebration will continue that’s how we love our cricket. Now we have a new season apart from monsoon, summer, winter, and spring and that’s the season of IPL” said Khan in his opening address.
The drenched audience though a little subdued in the start, became quite energized when all the Bollywood performances commenced.
The cheers grew louder with every celebrity that graced the stage. Celebrities like Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar dazzled the audience with their dance performances. Interestingly though, their song selection seemed to be from films such as Kaminey and Rock on! which were obviously much older and could have probably been used in the older seasons of IPL.
Hrithik Roshan’s performance as always, amazed the audience. He danced on songs from his films Bang Bang and Dhoom 2 and the audience could be seen dancing, gyrating and hooting along with the actor. As if in serious competition with Roshan, Anushka Sharma’s performance kept the audience glued to their seats. Quite interestingly, the audience kept screaming ‘Kohli, Kohli’ as Sharma performed!
Amidst all the performances, glitz and glamour, the skippers from each team were introduced and then a formal oath taking ceremony took place. The namesake ‘city of joy’ became quite literal when the audience couldn’t stop smiling and the celebrities couldn’t stop basking in their glory.
