Amidst numerous saas-bahu sagas and love tales dominating our TV screens, Geo TV’s new drama serial Khalish that follows a revenge story is a breath of fresh air. Starring Faysal Qureshi, Asif Raza Mir, Zainab Qayyum (ZQ) and Sunita Marshal, the drama has been directed by Syed Ali Raza and has an intriguing plot while the performances make it all the more interesting to watch.

It is the story of Sahil (Faysal), son of Mumtaz (ZQ) and Altamash (Asif Raza Mir) who parted ways when he was one year old. Altamash had fallen in love with Mumtaz, who was an orphan, and secretly married her but later refused to accept her in front of his family due to their class difference. This left poor Sahil and his mother estranged and the two are forced to lead their lives in extreme poverty without any support from the father. While the two were struggling with circumstances, Sahil somehow manages to complete his MBA by taking up multiple part time jobs. Amidst these difficult circumstances, he loses the love of his life, Nageen (Sunita Marshal) due to his low social status and she gets married to the man of her parents’ choice who happens to be Sahil’s step brother, Feroz (Kamran Jilani).

Sahil’s mother, who’s suffering from poor health, calls Altamash after 35 years and asks him to compensate for what she and her son have suffered through all these years. Guilty, Altamash agrees to give them what they need but Sahil doesn’t want to associate himself with his father. However, fate has another plan for him; his mother passes away and to honour her will, Sahil agrees to live with his father.

While Sahil agrees to live with his father, he is determined to take revenge from all those who wronged his mother and are responsible for her death. He steps into the house with revenge on his mind and begins to impress everyone with his polite and kind gestures; while some don’t appreciate his presence, others start liking him. He is still unaware that Nageen has gotten married to his step brother as the two are out of town when Sahil comes to live with the family. What follows next will be seen in the upcoming episodes but so far the drama has kept us hooked.

Khalish revolves around themes such as class difference, betrayal, love, relationships and above all, revenge. It highlights some of the common problems that exist in our society since time immemorial but continue to prevail even today. While it may not be something new, revenge stories are rarely seen on our television screens; hence, Khalish makes for an interesting watch. The impressive performances by all these veteran actors simply add value to the production.

Given Faysal’s incredible range as an actor, he not only makes the character relatable but is quite convincing too as a strong, confident and self made man. Asif Raza Mir, on the other hand, brings brilliance and finesse whenever he appears on the screen while Zainab Qayyum delivers a powerful performance as Sahil’s old, ailing mother.

Written by Imran Ali Safir and produced by Aijaz Aslam, a double episode of Khalish airs on Geo TV every Wednesday 8pm onwards. Aside from lead characters, the drama also features Tanveer Jamal, Jahanara Hai, Ismat Zaidi and Tabasum Arif, among many others.
