Patty Jenkins, the woman who directed this year’s big hit, Wonder Woman, is in final negotiations to direct its sequel. Wonder Woman, having opened to 103.2 million dollars went on to collect nearly to 800 million dollars worldwide. According to Deadline, the sequel was officially confirmed last month at Comic-Con where the studio announced a release date of Dec. 13, 2019 and the return of Gal Godat in the titular role.

But many wondered as to why Jenkins was not signed on immediately to helm the sequel. As it turns out, it’s because she wants to be paid substantially more than the first film and as much as any male director counterpart. The good news is that Warner Bros is mostly likely onboard. A source privy to the studio said they were “confident the deal will be reached soon.”

On average, a fresh director gets paid anywhere between 1.5 to 3 million dollars to helm a comic book movie while someone like Zack Snyder makes 10 million dollars per project. Given Snyder’s bad comic book movies in recent past like Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Jenkins should make anywhere between 8 to 10 million dollars, if Hollywood is serious about equality.

Jenkins’ foray into commercial cinema comes on the heels of some pretty acclaimed work. She wrote and directed Monster in 2003 for which Charlize Theron won an Oscar. She went on to direct a handful of TV episodes for shows as diverse as Entourage and The Killing before finally landing the gig of a lifetime with Wonder Woman. It remains to be seen if the rest of the Wonder Woman cast will reprise their roles in the 2019 sequel.
