After receiving an overwhelming response across the festival circuit, theatre production Qusoorwaar is now heading to NAPA Repertory Theatre, this weekend.

Directed by Sunil Shankar, the play is an adaptation of a 1957 Hollywood film called 12 Angry Men and tackles themes of crime and punishment that remain relevant to the times we live in.

While the original film tells the story of a 12-person jury who question the defendant in a bid to prevent a miscarriage of justice, the adapted play has been modified to give it a local spin.

Director Sunil Shankar, while explaining this modification, told Instep, “We tried to localize it in a manner that makes it relevant to our part of the world. It’s a mature, hard hitting play. There are quite a few social and religious aspects to it.”

One significant difference between the original script and this particular theatre production is the addition of a woman to the proceedings. Another significant reason why this play differs from other theatre productions is that it challenges stereotypes, both overt and subliminal.

A two-hour long courtroom drama, with no interval in between, it is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a sharp legal drama and for those who are fans of local theatre and its gradual expansion.
