While Trump considered it to be a “very great honour” and said that it means a lot to him, the cover caused a stir online since it looked like as if there is a set of horns on Trump’s head. It led to a discussion among social media users whether the placement of the letter ‘M’ in the magazine’s name is on purpose on their ‘Person of the Year’ issue.
US comedian Jeremy McLellan took to Twitter to share his views. “Donald Trump may have won ‘Person of the Year’ but Time wins ‘Magazine of the Year’ for using the “M” to give him devil horns,” he tweeted. While actress Alyssa Milano posted, “Horns. They gave him horns.”
However, Time magazine was quick to deny that they deliberately gave the President-elect ‘devil horns’. They soon posted a gallery of previous covers, along with a statement, on their website that also have the letter placed in a similar manner on their subjects (Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Pope Francis, Margaret Thatcher, Prince Charles, Saddam Hussein and Jesus).
The statement reads, “Given the shape of the letter “m” in the magazine’s name and its location on the cover, many other subjects in the past have also appeared to sprout extra features. Any resemblance to cats, bats or devil horns is entirely coincidental.”
