In Hollywood, if the first half of the year is mostly about blockbusters and franchise cinema, the second half is geared towards the Oscar season. This year’s race in that sense is well on its way.

In Hollywood, if the first half of the year is mostly about blockbusters and franchise cinema, the second half is geared towards the Oscar season. This year’s race in that sense is well on its way.

While filmmakers like Clint Eastwood and Mel Gibson have earned Oscar buzz for direction of their films, Sully and Hacksaw Ridge respectively, the race for an Oscar nod for actresses is less unpredictable.

Leading the race is Natalie Portman, who has one Academy Award to her name for starring in the creepy lesbian drama, Black Swan for which she won in 2010. Essaying Jackie Kennedy, the widow of John F. Kennedy in the film Jackie, Portman is, at the moment, the frontrunner because critics have unanimously hailed her performance. There are strong rumours that suggest that Portman is poised to pick up the trophy.

In the second spot for a potential Oscar nomination nod is Emma Stone, who is starring opposite Ryan Gosling in La La Land, a film that has fetched positive reviews and for which Stone picked up a Best Actress trophy at the Venice Film Festival, which concluded recently.

The third person who could land a possible Oscar nomination nod and perhaps even the trophy is five-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams whose performance in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama, Arrival has put her on the shortlist.

A less likely candidate is Rooney Mara, who has three distinguished performances to her credit this year with films like Una, Lion and The Secret Scripture.
