Cleveland Cavaliers promote longtime executive Brandon Weems to general manager

The Cleveland Cavaliers have promoted Akron native Brandon Weems to general manager, filling the vacancy left by Mike Gansey’s departure earlier this year.

A source confirmed the promotion to ESPN, saying Weems will continue working under Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman.

Gansey left Cleveland in May to become president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Sixers later signed LeBron James in July after he considered several teams, including Cleveland.

Weems, a 2004 graduate of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, played high school basketball alongside James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

He joined the Cavaliers organisation as a scout in 2015 and has steadily moved through the team’s front office.

Weems served as Cleveland’s director of scouting from 2017 to 2021 before becoming senior director of player personnel for the 2021-22 season. He was promoted to assistant general manager in February 2022, a role he held until his latest promotion.

Before joining the Cavaliers, Weems worked on college basketball coaching staffs at Oakland University, Drexel and Kentucky.

Weems now takes over as general manager after more than a decade with the Cavaliers organisation.
