The Trump administration has announced plans to impose new sanctions on South Africa over alleged discrimination against whites and other minority groups in the country.

The sanctions would include travel restrictions. Moreover, according to the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, foreign nationals would be subjected to visa restrictions if they were found to be responsible for and complicit in enforcing discriminatory policies.

The policies range from allowing for uncompensated land seizures, race-based discrimination and provocation of violence against racial groups in South Africa. If they are found guilty, their US visas would be revoked.

Rubio said in a statement, “The United States will not allow such behavior to go unchecked. These actions directly undermine peace, economic stability, and the rule of law, and they are incompatible with the pillars of America’s foreign policy.”

“This visa restriction policy is only the first step in a series of escalatory measures that will show America’s firm resolve in this matter,” the official U.S. Ambassador to South Africa account posted on X on Wednesday.

Although Rubio did not name specific targets for the travel ban, a minority white advocacy group in South Africa has previously petitioned the US to sanction officials within the African National Congress (ANC).

The ANC, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, holds the largest block in South Africa's Parliament. However, the South African government has rejected these allegations related to discrimination, calling them baseless and misinformation.

At the heart of these allegations lie a disputable South African law that allows for the expropriation of unused private land without compensation in some circumstances. Earlier, the US imposed other sanctions against South Africa on the grounds of anti-American policies, including barring South African officials from G20 meetings this year and reducing aid for the country’s HIV treatment program.
