Highest-level recall issued for potato chips over banned ingredient posing death risk

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reportedly announced a recall of roughly 264 lbs of EI Eden Distributor Corp’s De Todito and De Todito BBQ potato chips because they contain imported pork from a country ineligible to export meat to the US, causing a significant health risk to American consumers.

The FSIS recall system further showed that this recall is the highest level of three, indicating a public health emergency where there is probability of product utilization will ultimately cause serious and adverse health consequences or death.

According to reports, the chips were imported on July 28 and shipped to a distributor in New Jersey and Utah. The recalled products do not have any import marks on the labels and the key problem was discovered when FSIS received a complaint regarding the chips.

Given the ongoing scenario, officials are urging Americans to not costume the chips or can return them to the place of purchase.

Under US law, a country can only export meat to the US after the USdA FSIS analysis the country’s inspection system determines the US inspection system, ensuring the safety and quality of foreign food products.

Notably, a country's eligibility does not primarily mean the products are safe, rather it means the US has not certified that country’s inspection system as meeting American requirements.

Nonetheless, the FSIS semantic mapping evaluates factors such as government oversight and enforcement, inspection, food safety systems and product traceability procedures.
