Grand Canyon flash floods spark search for 15 missing people, evacuating 62
The National Park Service said authorities were working to locate people who may have been in Bright Angel Canyon
Around 15 people are believed to be missing after significant flash flooding hit parts of Grand Canyon National Park, forcing dozens of people to evacuate.
The National Park Service said authorities were working to locate people who may have been in Bright Angel Canyon and around Phantom Ranch when flooding struck on Saturday afternoon.
"Grand Canyon National Park staff, in coordination with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, are continuing evacuation and response efforts and working to account for individuals who may have been in the affected area," the agency said.
At least 62 people have been evacuated, while flooding caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
"Nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, eliminating pedestrian access across the creek," the National Park Service said.
Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the North Kaibab Trail and several bridges have been closed until further notice.
National Weather Service meteorologist Justin Johndrow told The Associated Press that around half an inch to one inch of rain fell in roughly 30 minutes.
"Most of it ran off instantly," Johndrow said.
Officials warned further thunderstorms and heavy rain could bring additional flash flooding, debris flows and rockfalls on Sunday and Monday.
The number of people reported missing could change as authorities gather more information.
