South Korea's hottest day on record as authorities issue emergency heat warning

South Korea has recorded its highest temperature since modern records began, as authorities urged residents to avoid going outside during an intense heatwave.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the south-eastern city of Yangsan reached 42.5C on Sunday, the highest temperature recorded since weather observations began in 1904.

Yangsan has now experienced temperatures above 40C for five consecutive days, while cities including Daegu and Busan have also recorded temperatures in the high 30s.

The KMA issued emergency heatwave alerts for more than 20 areas and warned residents to “immediately stop all outdoor activities”, adding that “indoor spaces without air conditioning are dangerous.”

The agency also advised people to “Move immediately to a cool place, such as a designated cooling centre or a shaded area, and stay hydrated while resting.”

Speaking to AFP, Seoul resident Ju Dong-yeol said: “It is too hot to be outside doing anything.”

“I can’t think of anything else to do other than stay in airconditioned places like home, shopping malls and cafes.”

The extreme heat also disrupted sport, with the Korea Baseball Organization cancelling a professional baseball game in Changwon.

The organisation said: “The decision was made with the safety and health of spectators and players as the top priority, as a severe heatwave warning remains in effect for the Changwon area.”
