Prince Harry has shared a sweet family ritual he, Meghan Markle and their children use to remember Princess Diana on both her birthday and the anniversary of her death.

The Duke of Sussex was speaking during a Q&A session at Scotty’s Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire on Saturday, July 11, when he revealed that the tradition was simply baking a lemon drizzle cake.

Harry made the revelation after being asked by a teenager attending the event whether he observes any special traditions on July 1, Princess Diana’s birthday, or Aug. 31, the anniversary of her death.

“Yes, we do lemon drizzle cake,” Harry said, adding that traditions like these hold special meaning for his family. “I think traditions are really, really important,” he explained. “Especially when they’re sweet.”

The event was part of Harry’s work as Global Ambassador for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a UK charity supporting bereaved military children. The cause is especially personal for the prince, who was just 12 years old when Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Harry has frequently spoken about the impact of losing his mother. During an appearance at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne earlier this year, he described grief as disorienting at any age and touched upon the emotional challenges of growing up in the public eye.

“There have been many times when I’ve felt overwhelmed,” he said, adding that for years he felt emotionally numb before developing healthier ways to cope with his loss.

The appearance also came days after Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet reportedly reunited privately with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire.

The family gathering marked the first in-person meeting between Meghan, the children and the King and Queen in four years.

Buckingham Palace has not released any photographs or further details, calling it a private family occasion.
