Apple’s new ‘Siri AI’ tool fails to meet EU regulatory requirements
The European Commission said Apple’s new AI-powered tool does not comply with EU regulations on interoperability, privacy, and security standards
Apple will not roll out "Siri AI" in Europe. The European Commission on June 9 said Apple's newly launched artificial intelligence tool Siri AI, failed to comply with EU rules.
It comes as tech giant Apple did not provide a compliance solution that met the bloc's interoperability, privacy, and security requirements under the regulatory framework governing large digital platforms.
The Commission said Apple sought an exemption from those obligations instead, and that request was rejected. As a result, Apple chose not to launch the feature in the EU.
A spokesperson for the EU Commission, Thomas Regnier, said on Tuesday the iPhone maker decided not to roll out its new Siri AI tool in the European Union after it had unsuccessfully requested to be exempted from interoperability obligations for the tool.
Regnier told reporters in Brussels, "The decision not to roll out Siri AI in the EU is Apple's and Apple's only."
"Instead of trying to find a suitable compliance solution, Apple simply made a request to the European Commission to be exempted from their interoperability obligations. That's not an option."
On the contrary, Apple has expressed disappointment with the outcome.
The company argues that the EU's "interoperability" requirements could require broader access to user data and device functions, which Apple says may create privacy and security risks.
