London Euston evacuation: Suspicious item triggers security alert
The heightened alert was short-lived and station reopened shortly
London Euston, one of the capital’s busiest railway hubs, was abruptly evacuated on Thursday afternoon after a security alert was triggered by the report of a suspicious item.
The incident, which unfolded shortly before 3:00 PM, caused a significant suspension of services and major disruption for thousands of commuters.
British Transport Police (BTP) officers swiftly attended the scene at approximately 2:45 PM. The station was immediately cordoned off and passengers were ordered to leave the concourse as a precautionary measure. Emergency services, including police and fire brigade units, converged on the area.
Avanti West Coast, Transport for London (TfL) and train operator, confirmed the closure, with all train services in and out of the station being suspended. Photos and videos shared on social media showed large crowds of travellers gathered on the streets outside.
The heightened alert was short-lived, with BTP concluding their investigation within the hour. The station reopened shortly after 3:30 PM.
A British Transport Police spokesperson confirmed the all-clear, stating: “The item has since been assessed as non-suspicious and the incident stood down.”
While the evacuation itself was brief, the knock-on effect caused significant travel disruption throughout the evening. Affected routes included Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services.
London Euston’s official media account urged passengers to “Be safe, Be patient, Be kind” as they navigated the continued delays.
