The Sussexes’ engagement photographer is joining Meghan Markle in calling out racial prejudice.
Years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stirred up a storm by accusing unnamed members of the Royal Family of racism, photographer Alexi Lubomirski is calling out racism in the fashion world.
Daily Mail’s Richard Eden reported on June 24 that Lubomirski recalled how industry insiders discouraged diversity behind the scenes.
“Black girls don’t carry high fashion,” one senior magazine editor allegedly told him.
The fashion photographer said he became more aware of the problem after working with Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o.
“She said to me, ‘I really love these pictures. Can you make sure, when they’re retouching the photos, they don’t lighten my skin?’”
That moment prompted him to reflect on his past work, which is when he noticed “a definite difference” between the photos he submitted to magazines and the images that came out.
Lubomirski said he also noticed how rarely he was allowed to photograph women of colour. When he brought up the matter with various editors-in-chiefs, they would simply tell him, ‘It comes down to economics... we’re going to sell 40 per cent less copies.’”
Four years ago, the Duchess of Sussex made a similar accusation during her appearance on Oprah Winfrey with Prince Harry. Meghan — now a mom-of-two — claimed that there had been “concerns” in the Royal Family about the skin colour of her son Archie, now 6, before he was born.
