Total solar eclipse 2024: Scientists suggest to wear red and green on April 8
Thanks to the Purkinje effect, wearing red and green will enhance our experience of the eclipse
As the highly anticipated and rare solar eclipse approaches us, scientists are suggesting ways to enhance our experience of the eclipse, Az Central reported.
While there is no official dress code, wearing red or green colour ignites the Purkinje effect, which amplifies the visual experience for eclipse enthusiasts.
The Purkinje effect, also known as Purkinje shift, is a phenomenon in which our eyes become more accustomed to bluish-green hues during low-light conditions.
During the eclipse, as the moon will block the sun light, the surroundings will gradually turn a blueish greenish colour as totality approaches.
According to Space.com, our eyes become more sensitive to hues in the bluish-green region of the spectrum when there is a solar eclipse.
As complimentary hues, red and green intensify each other's effects when viewed together.
Consequently, dressing in red and green at the time of a solar eclipse can enhance our ability to see details and contrasts in low light conditions.
As per a spokesperson from Solar Eyeglasses, "This Purkinje effect during the coming eclipse will turn the whole experience from just watching the sky go dark to a real-life science demo on your clothes. But to really see the changes in colour saturation, lots of people need to wear these complimentary red and green colours. Two or five in a group of 100 wouldn’t help."
They also recommend avoiding neutral colours like black, grey, white or brown if you want to experience the full effect.
