The US Geological Survey said that an earthquake struck the heavily populated New York City metropolitan area on Friday morning.

Locals reported feeling tremors throughout the eastern shore, according to The Guardian.

A preliminary magnitude of 4.8 earthquake with a centre close to Lebanon, New Jersey, was recorded by the agency.

People in the nearby states of Connecticut and Massachusetts reported feeling the earthquake, whereas, Bostians reported feeling it as well, according to the Weather Channel.

On Friday, the New York fire department announced that there had been no initial reports of damage.

The New York police department’s deputy commissioner of operations, Kaz Daughtry, said in a statement: “While we do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, we’re still assessing the impact.”

The New York governor, Kathy Hochul, said that the quake was felt throughout the state.

“My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” he added.

The trembling brought back memories of the earthquake that struck on August 23, 2011, shocking tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada. With a magnitude of 5.8, it was the most powerful earthquake to strike the East Coast since World War II. Virginia served as its epicentre.

Moreover, three weeks prior to the tenth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, that earthquake shook New Yorkers, caused fractures in the Washington Monument, and prompted the evacuation of the White House and Capitol.
