Maldivian prosecutor general stabbed amid political crisis

Hussain Shameem, the prosecutor general of the Maldives, was reportedly stabbed by an unknown man on Wednesday morning as the country remains embroiled in a political crisis, Hindustan Times reported.

Shameem was appointed by the ex-Maldivian president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the country's main opposition party, which recently initiated impeachment proceedings against President Mohamed Muizzu.

Shameem is under treatment at the ADK hospital after he hit his hand and suffered a crack in the wrist.

The Maldivian police, in their statement, said, "Prosecutor Hussain Shameem has been attacked on the streets of the city. He is being treated at ADK. The attack was not carried out with a sharp object."

A critical vote on legislative approval for the Muizzu government was recently marred by riots in the Maldivian Parliament, adding to the already rising unrest in the island nation.

Tensions in the parliamentary sessions escalated when opposition members interrupted the session.

Dramatic images that went viral on social media showed members of the Maldivian Parliament, Isa of the MDP, and Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem of the People's National Congress (PNC), resorting to a physical fight.

President Muizzu is accused by the opposition party of having a pro-China stance, especially in light of the recent and contentious docking of a Chinese surveillance ship in Male, the country's capital.

Following a dispute in parliament, the decision was made to start the impeachment process.
