Warner Bros. is bringing back the beloved Gremlins franchise with a new film, Gremlins 3, scheduled for release on November 19, 2027.
The announcement was made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during the company's third-quarter earnings call.
Steven Spielberg is returning as executive producer, and Chris Columbus, who wrote the original 1984 film, is set to direct and produce the new installment.
The Gremlins franchise has a rich history, dating back to the 1920s when the term "gremlins" was coined to describe mechanical failures in RAF aircraft. The concept was later popularized by children's author Roald Dahl in his 1943 book, The Gremlins.
The first Gremlins film, directed by Joe Dante, was a dark horror comedy that introduced the adorable Mogwai creature and its destructive green monster alter egos. The film was a box office hit, grossing $151 million domestically.
The new film will be a direct sequel, with Columbus promising a "twisted and dark script" that returns to the practical puppetry of the original films. Columbus has stated that he will not use CGI for the mogwai and gremlins, instead opting for the tactile charm of the original films.
The revival of the Gremlins franchise is likely driven by the success of recent legacy sequels, such as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
With Spielberg and Columbus on board, fans can expect a film that honours the tone and style of the originals while appealing to a new generation of viewers.
