ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has demanded of the federal government to issue a code of conduct for the holy month of Ramazan in consultation with provinces and stakeholders and ensure provision of relief to the common man during the month.
JI Central Secretary General Liaquat Baloch released on Saturday an 18-point charter of demand to the government which, he said, if implemented would ensure sanctity of the holy month and keep prices of essential commodities including fruit and other items under control.
The JI asked the government to ensure sufficient supply of food items in the market and also give 30 percent discount on essential food items.
There should also be at least one Utility Stores outlet in each Union Council.
The JI leader through the charter observed that the federal cabinet announced Rs1.75 billion subsidy through Utility Stores but the government had made no arrangements to control price-hike in the open market during the month of Ramazan.
He said the government should ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity, gas and water particularly during timings of Sehri and Iftar.
Liaquat Baloch also asked the government to benefit from latest technology and consult with the Ulema to ensure start of month of fasting and Eidul Fitr on same days throughout the country.
He said special security of mosques should also be made during prayers particularly for Taraveeh timings.
The JI leader also demanded of the government to issue a code of conduct for the electronic media and it should be ensured that no programmes like fashion shows, morning shows and musical programmes are telecast.
The JI’s charter of demands also asked the private television channels to telecast programmes including translation of the Holy Quran, Dars-e-Quran and exhibit such material that promotes Islamic values in their transmission.
The JI also wanted the government to direct district administration for removal of vulgar posters and signboards from public places to preserve sanctity of the holy month.
He said the print media should also fulfill its responsibility for publication of special supplements and articles relating to the importance of the month and promotion of Islamic teachings.
He said the rights of labourers and working class should also be protected with provision of additional salaries and holidays.
