Query

Dear Editor,

While the world celebrated the life and work of William Shakespeare this month with respect to the 400th anniversary of his death, I was surprised to see that Us did not feature anything of the sort. My question is simple: why didn’t you? Given the legendary playwright and poet is a personal favourite as well, I might be biased to ask you about a special feature, but I do think there are many among us youth who would have liked reading about the Bard by Us writers.

Respected Editor,

I have been an avid reader of your magazine for quite some time now, but this is the first time that I am writing to you. Actually, I want to contribute, too. I’ll be highly obliged if you can you tell me about the whole process.

Farah Shah, Karachi

Hi, Farah. Since Us is a youth’s magazine, it’s expected that your submissions pertain to their interests. You can email your articles, stories, artwork to us.mag@thenews.com.pk; email your poetry to uspoetscorner@gmail.com. Please keep in mind that the word count for one page is 550-650 words.

Feedback

Dear Ed,

The story ‘Our rising young scientists’ (April 29) was quite fascinating as was ‘Where there’s a dream...there’s a way’ (April 22) and ‘Underprivileged – no more’ (April 22). Since I am a keen learner and social enthusiast too, I always like reading about the achievements of other students. Also, it makes me proud to see Pakistani students, in particular, making waves at all levels. Kudos to them and to Us for putting these young stars in the limelight.

Hey Eddie,

What’s with the monotonous tone of your esteemed magazine? I think you should include more witty articles like ‘When in doubt, pout?’ by Lubna Jerar Naqvi (April 15). “Etymology” by Ali Suleman rocks! The latter is very informative; his choice of terms selected so far and the way he describes them, remarkable.

Salam Ed,

I am writing this letter with reference to Javeria Waseem’s story ‘Breathe’ (April 29). It was a touching piece and the sad part is it’s true for most of the girls in our society. I seriously fail to understand why parents do such a thing to their children. I am appalled especially to see mothers and grandmothers being biased against their daughters in such instances. I am glad I did not have any such experience and have always been supported by my family. However, one does not have to walk in their shoes to realise the trauma these children - yes, boys included - suffer in silence for most part (if not the entire) of their lives, never reaching their full potential. I humbly request the parents to change their perspectives and to treat their kids fairly, without questioning everything that they do.

US MAILReflection

Narrated by Aisha (R.A)

(The wife of the Prophet) Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) used to invoke Allah in the prayer saying “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min adhabil-qabri, wa a’udhu bika min fitnatil-masihid-dajjal, wa a’udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wa fitnatil-mamati. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-ma thami wal-maghrami. (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave and from the afflictions of Masih Ad-Dajjal and from the afflictions of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the sins and from being in debt).” Somebody said to him, “Why do you so frequently seek refuge with Allah from being in debt?” The Prophet replied, “A person in debt tells lies whenever he speaks, and breaks promises whenever he makes (them).” Aisha also narrated: I heard Allah’s Apostle in his prayer seeking refuge with Allah from the afflictions of Ad-dajjal.
