Election commission officials will meet on Saturday (today) to discuss the arrangements for the NA-246 by-polls.
The meeting will be held at the provincial election office. Election commission secretary Baber Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad will preside over it and review the arrangements.
The chief secretary, home secretary, Karachi commissioner and the IGP will also attend the meeting and brief the election secretary about the pre-and post- polls measures. Sources told The News that the Pakistan Printing Corporation has finished printing ballot papers and other election material for the by-elections.
There are 357,781 registered voters in the constituency of whom 196,187 are male and 161,594 female. According to the 1998 census, the estimated population of the area is 494,344.
There will be 213 polling stations, 15 each for only males and females, and 183 for both. The total number of polling booths is 769, 397 for males and 372 for females. The areas that fall under the NA-246 include Federal B Area Block 7, 12, 13 and 14, including Moosa Colony, Karimabad, Sharifabad, , Block 2 and 8 of Azizabad, Block 8 of Bhingoria Goth, Mohammadi Colony, , Al-Azam Square, Gharibabad, Ishaqabad, Liaquatabad No 3, 4 10, 7, 8 and 9, Sikandarabad, Bandhani Colony, Rajputana Colony, Block 15 of Yaseenabad, Block 15 of Railway Colony, Asif Nagar and Goharabad that includes two towns, Liaquatabad and Gulberg.
The staff of six police stations will be deployed for security during the polls.
Colonel Asad Nouman of the Sachal Rangers 73 Wing in Gulberg Town and Lt Colonel Ammar of the Sachal Rangers 81 Wing in Liaquatabad will be controlling the security affairs.
Ali Asghar Sial, the regional election commissioner, will be the district returning officer, and Syed Nadeem Haider, the district election commissioner, will serve as the returning officer with Sumera Hussain, the Gulberg assistant commissioner, and Tariq Ali, the Gulberg town education officer, assist them both.
