RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif was awarded Brazil’s coveted award Order of Merit at a special ceremony in recognition of his leadership for successful fight against multiple threats.
According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Raheel is the first Asian to have won this coveted award. The Brazil government says the Order of Merit is being given to General Raheel for displaying remarkable courage to deal with the menace of terrorism, successfully leading the Army in the face of multiple threats, giving hope to his nation against dismay, despondency and above all for his great efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
The army chief through his undaunting resolve, unflinching sincerity and impeccable professional commitment has become a leading figure in the world. His contribution to promote exemplary ties between Pakistan and Brazil in general and the two armies in particular are enormous and unprecedented.
It may be mentioned here that besides General Raheel Sharif following notable world leaders and military commanders have also received Grand Officer award.
1. Kaulza de Arriaga, Portugese general, writer, professor and politician.
2. Deight D Eisenhower, former US president.
3. James Garesche Ord, US general, who was also chairman of the joint US Brazil Defence Commission in WWII.
4. Lamuel C Shepherd Jr, four-star general of US Marine Corps.
5. Walter Bedell Smith, Senior US Army general, diplomat and ex-director CIA.
6. Raymond T Odierno, US army general, who served as the 38th chief of staff of the US army.
