LAHORE: Senior lawyer and human rights campaigner Asma Jahangir on Monday said the way pendulum was swinging in the country showed that the lawyers might again have to support democracy.
“Even a weak democracy is better than military dictatorship,” she said while addressing a ceremony held in connection with the nomination of Independent Group’s candidates for the upcoming Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections.
Asma said the political leaders’ credibility was missing from the recent by-polls and they couldn’t fulfill the people’s expectations, but it didn’t mean that one should stop supporting democracy.
She welcomed the chief justice’s statement about revitalising the Supreme Judicial Council and said the SCBA was a political bar with its own status, point of view and reputation.
The group might have to support democracy and they had to select a quality leadership, she said, while hoping that the Independent Group nominees would prove to be deserving leadership.
