SUKKUR: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah visited on Wednesday the Ulera Dyke of Katcha area in Khairpur, Ghotki, Panno Aqil and distributed ration among flood victims.
The chief minister said re-strengthening of dykes was the responsibility of the Indus River Commission, which was being controlled by the federal government, but it did not work at the dykes, even the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) role was also invisible. However the provincial disaster management authority (PDMA) is active.
The chief minister said there was no possibility of super flood but there was a high flood as 750,000 cusecs water was passing from the Sukkur Barrage. He said water from India does not fall into the Indus River but the water of Tarbela and Kabul River enter in it.
The CM said the situation at the Shank dyke was critical, but the army had re-strengthened it and the situation became normal. He said the Sindh government, Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy were monitoring the water level round the clock and are also patrolling the dykes.
He said re-strengthening of the Ulera Dyke is underway and 40 percent of the work has been completed. Chief Engineer Irrigation and Deputy Commissioner Khairpur, while briefing the CM said 2,600 flood victims had been shifted to safer places and in camps with the help of the Pakistan Navy, while around 72,000 cattle vaccinated.
The CM said the operation in Karachi was not targeted at any political party but was against criminals, extortionists, land grabbers, extremists and terrorists. He said law and order is now better in Karachi and other cities of Sindh. He said the Sindh government has given a free hand to the police to restore the writ of law. He pointed out there was no conflict within the party over reshuffling in the cabinet.
