Karachi: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) shut its headquarters, commonly known as 90, and all its sector, zonal and unit offices across the city in what it said was a reaction to the ‘targeted operation’ against its workers and leaders.
Many supporters, workers and followers came on to the streets adjacent to its chief Altaf Hussain’s residence later.The sectors, zonal and unit offices had been shut for quite some time since the Rangers raided 90 early in March and arrested key leader Amir Khan alongwith scores of workers. Amir Khan was later released on bail.
On Eid day other senior leaders Qamar Mansoor and Kaif-ul-Wara were arrested, but the latter was released and Qamar Mansoor was remanded to Rangers custody for 90 days for delivering a hate speech against the Rangers, as its spokesman said.
Patrolling by Rangers was increased around 90 late on Wednesday night with a heavy deployment of law-enforcement agencies also seen,None of the senior MQM leaders was available for any comment, while the phones of most office bearers of the MQM were also switched off.
Many senior leaders reportedly had gone underground to avoid arrests. It was however learnt through reliable sources that all the offices were closed on the instructions of the party high command.
